I Became a Genius Commander at the Academy - Chapter 6
EP.6
“Peter Jaeger’s platoon and Johann von Hausenburg’s platoon, please come to the center of the playground.”
The call to come out to the stadium didn’t contain any emotion, but those words made my heart pound.
If I defeat John’s platoon with an overwhelming margin of skill in the mock battle that is about to begin, their evaluation of me will change from an orphan cadet born as an eyesore to a talented and promising future commander.
At least in a mock battle, my abilities as a commander will be evaluated objectively, not based on my origin or status.
“Jaeger platoon! Keep pace and move forward!”
My platoon, including myself, moved as if we were one person, matching the height and stride of our feet as we trained.
On the opposite side, John’s platoon was marching in line and at intervals, but with both hands and feet moving at different angles.
In this era when there was no concept of ritual, the march with hands and feet together as if they were one body was quite a shock to the audience, and even though the fight had not yet started, people could already hear people murmuring and even sighing.
“Did you say Peter Yeager? How do you train that bastard’s unit to be able to hit their feet so accurately? “Did you practice just that for a month?”
“When my friends and I were betting on who would win with 3 silver coins, we bet on the Hausenburg guy… Aren’t we going to lose money like this?”
“I haven’t seen the details yet, but just looking at them marching, they are almost at the level of elite soldiers…”
When people are asked to imagine an elite unit, they usually imagine a unit where each soldier has excellent capabilities.
Anyone with some knowledge of military science will agree that an elite army is an army that has excellent coordination among its members, even if each unit member possesses only basic capabilities.
With the development of weapons, firepower and range greatly increased, and until modern warfare began, where standing together meant death, the fight between ranks and formations was a war, and the collapse of ranks and formations was the factor that determined victory and defeat, and the collapse of the battle line was a battle. Losing was defeat.
In order to properly form ranks and formations, it is incomparably more important to match each person’s movements through rituals than in modern warfare.
Because it is such a world, my unit that makes all the right moves will be seen as elite in their eyes.
It’s so… nice to see you be astonished when you see the abilities of the commoner orphan you ignored.
When Yohan’s platoon was about 20 meters away from the attention and attention, the student council officer in charge of the game raised a flag and gave the order to stop.
“I will give you 5 minutes from the current time to form a formation. Johan Peter Two cadets, create the best formation to defeat your opponent.”
As soon as those words fell, I immediately turned my eyes towards the soldiers and said:
“From now on, form your formation as I ordered. Do you understand?”
“Yes, I understand!”
“They stand in four rows, eight per row, and eight people holding crossbows are at the back, covering the spearmen in the front. Also, when clashing for the first time, the soldiers at the front should focus only on removing the enemy’s spears, and the soldiers behind them should stab the enemy to gain victory! “The squad leaders in charge of each column must do their best to suppress the enemy!”
A tactic where the first line blocks the enemy’s attack and the second line attacks the enemy directly.
It may not seem that difficult if you just say it, but in reality it is quite a difficult fighting method.
This is because the long spear is a very long weapon, and unlike a sword, it is not easy to move it nimbly.
This is because in a situation where soldiers are crowded together, it is not easy to secure space to swing the spear due to the limbs and bodies of our soldiers.
Of course, in my platoon, where each platoon member moves according to a set movement, it is possible to attack like that until a melee occurs.
“From then on, all you have to do is follow the commands of me and the deputy platoon commander. “Don’t be nervous, the enemies are our food.”
The soldiers responded with cheers and the flag was raised to signal 10 seconds before the start of the game.
Just before the game started, Yohan spoke in a provocative voice, bragging as if he had already won everything.
“If you are a commoner, quickly surrender to me, a noble, like a commoner! Then you won’t have to show an ugly defeat!”
No matter how noble the man may be, it is against manners to provoke him like this in a mock battle.
Moreover, if it were not before the race for the jockey to speak informally to me, the rider, his words and actions could be judged as negative depending on the interpretation.
I happened to have a lot of money accumulated, so I might as well pay it back to some extent before the game starts.
“Stop talking nonsense, Johan! “Even a drunkard in the market who can’t control himself will speak kinder than you!”
When he said that, his face turned red with anger like a drunk person, and the official in charge of running the game declared from about 30 meters away with a pitiful expression on his face.
“The last mock battle of the day begins now! Let each cadet fight fair and square!”
At the same time as those words were spoken, John and I slowly approached the opponent while maintaining our formation.
Gradually, the distance between us became closer and closer, from 10 meters to 7 meters to 5 meters, until each person’s spear reached the point where it could touch the other’s.
John commanded confidently from his platoon’s infantry, as if he thought he had already won.
“Destroy Peter Yeager’s platoon! They are a ragtag group led by a commoner. There is no victory for them! “Let’s definitely win and go back!!!”
At the same time as those words were spoken, the crossbowmen in my platoon fired their crossbows without arrowheads at the first row of enemy spearmen who had put their spears back to stab us.
It would have been best if all 8 people had fired 8 shots and hit all 8 people, but was this because they were only focusing on improving their ability to move as one body as a unit? Or maybe it was because it was a real battle and the aim was unstable.
The actual hits were about 4 to 5 shots.
However, those who have not experienced actual combat and are only focused on improving their individual capabilities…
“…..”
“What is that? Why are arrows suddenly flying? “Just a moment ahead!!”
“You idiots, look ahead, not at the ones standing next to you with arrows!!”
Even with such a blow, the army could no longer show its unity and began to struggle.
It was really nice to see the platoon of John, who had ignored me, broken down like that, but it was still too early to let down his guard.
Also, if you are going to get smashed, it is polite to ruin your career to the point where it will be difficult for you to recover as an officer.
“Now! “The first row removes the spears, and the second row follows the squad leader’s instructions and stabs the enemy in front of you at once!”
John tried to respond somehow as I gave orders and prepared to attack.
My soldiers removed the spears of the enemy first-line soldiers, who were already half-collapsed, and then our second-line soldiers simultaneously stabbed their bodies and neutralized them.
With this alone, almost all of their spearmen’s ranks have been destroyed.
John’s soldiers don’t even know how to fight in formation, but when they see the formation collapsed and the allies around them spread out with spears and arrows.
“I ate everything!”
“No, when I came to the academy and was trained by Platoon Commander Yohan, I thought we could somehow win, but I can’t even touch it!”
“Are those damn bastards really new recruits like us? “Didn’t the instructor cheat?”
He showered me with the highest praise and my morale sank to the lowest level.
In order to take advantage of this opportunity and completely destroy the enemy unit, I pulled out my sword from my waist and entered the broken enemy lines, shouting.
“John’s entire platoon line has collapsed! Everyone follow me and charge at the same time! “The crossbowmen should also put down their crossbows and follow with their wooden swords!”
At the same time, I kicked the torso of the enemy soldier in front of me, knocked him down, and then struck his torso with the sword in my hand.
It felt like I was hitting a punching bag with a baseball bat that was hard on the surface but soft on the inside with both hands.
He struck the helmet of an enemy soldier who was unable to move while hovering over him, stunning him, and struck the solar plexus of the guy who was running from the side as if this was his chance.
The soldiers in my platoon followed me and shouted as they knocked down the remaining soldiers of John one by one.
“We won!”
“I won’t beat you if you put down your weapons and surrender, so surrender!!”
When John saw that, he seemed to have decided something and rushed at me with the commander’s wooden sword.
He must have lost his senses at the sight of his platoon being pushed back in an instant, and all his movements, from the stance he took to pointing his sword, were extremely sloppy.
So I kicked the guy in the waist, knocked him to the side, and crushed his body as he tried to get up.
Then, filled with resentment, he punched John in the face of his resistance and punched him three times, then pointed the wooden sword at his neck and said,
“I, Peter Jaeger, have defeated Johann von Hausenburg and his platoon!”
At the same time, the soldiers shouted and the official in charge of refereeing the match looked surprised and declared.
“Peter Yeager, winner of the mock battle!”
As soon as I heard the announcement that I had won, I started to hear people in the stands talking about us.
“Isn’t that senior definitely the commoner orphan in the fourth year? No matter how senior Hausenburg’s grades are, he is in the middle of the rankings. “I don’t think this is a battle between students. Even if you were an instructor, would you have done something like that if you were in the same situation?”
“… Is it really true that it was a fight between new recruits who had only been trained for a month? Senior Jaeger’s unit was being destroyed as if a platoon of elites were toying with new soldiers. Was it actually a hidden talent?”
“Even Hausenburg, he’s tired of being an officer. “No matter how strong the Jaeger platoon was, they lost so miserably.”
Although there was a bit of sympathy for the Hausenburg guy who lost so ugly.
Their interest is a reserve officer named Peter Yeager, who has been an orphan for four years and has not been able to spread his wings.
Also, if you look at the reviews you hear there, the image of a 4th grade senior who was the cool guy among them has completely disappeared.
The result is more satisfying than expected.
If I just do this when I go to the front line in the future, I will be able to perform well and move up.
So I finished the last game, receiving a mixture of goodwill and astonishment from them, and a week later, my platoon and I were dispatched to the Rhineland front.
A word from the author (author’s review)
As a side note, formal training and training manuals were actually introduced into the military in the late Middle Ages.
Until then, it was a matter of knowing how to swing a weapon randomly or learning the know-how of seniors, so it was all about coordinating the movements rather than making unified movements.
So, such a setting was possible.
